Scorch Ultimate – Carolina Women’s Club Ultimate Frisbee
About
Not ready to retire the high school cleats but don’t want the stress of a Division 1 sport? Looking for a competitive atmosphere to stay active and have fun? Afraid to call yourself a NARP (Non-Athletic Regular Person)? Look no further: Scorch Ultimate is here!
Scorch Ultimate is a club-level sport at the University of South Carolina open to female and nonbinary students, freshman through graduate level. No experience is required; we will teach you everything there is to know about ultimate frisbee. Our members come from all kinds of majors and athletic backgrounds, so we can virtually guarantee you’ll find your people here. Off the field, we host frequent social events, so Scorch is not only a great way to stay in shape and play a sport, but also somewhere to meet new friends. We are tight-knit family who supports each other both on and off the field!
Scorch Ultimate currently competes under the governing body of USA Ultimate (USAU), a not-for-profit organization that serves as the governing body of the sport of ultimate frisbee in the United States. Scorch is located in the Atlantic Coast Region in USAU’s sectioning. Within the Atlantic Coast Region, Scorch is a member of the Carolina D1 Conference which carries North Carolina, North Carolina - Wilmington, North Carolina State, Duke, Wake Forest, Appalachian State, East Carolina, and, last (but least), Clemson.
The main events of our season fall primarily in the spring semester, ending with playoff tournaments in late April/early May, but we start in the fall, playing through the entire school year. We practice 2-3 nights per week, except for during breaks, and attend 2-4 tournaments per semester. These tournaments require the team to travel on weekends—anywhere from Georgia to Virginia. Our performance in these earlier tournaments dictates whether or not we advance to the end-of-season sectional and regional playoff tournaments.
Although Scorch is able to receive some funding through the University of South Carolina and various team fundraisers, players are required to pay semesterly dues to further cover the cost of travel, hotels, and other team expenses. Despite the required dues for participation in tournaments, Scorch is still one of the cheaper sports clubs here at USC! The only thing you are strongly recommended to purchase for Scorch is a pair of cleats; it doesn’t matter what kind. If you don’t already own a pair (or didn’t bring your highschool soccer cleats to college), don’t worry about purchasing them before the first practice. You’ll have plenty of time the rest of the season to wear them! Later in the season, we do offer the option to purchase all kinds of Scorch merch: jerseys, hats, sweatshirts, sweatpants, and more, but none of it is required.
Whether you've played ultimate frisbee all your life or you've never heard of the sport before, WE WANT YOU. Many of our members never played ultimate before joining Scorch, and we’ve all worked hard to be where we are now. We all have to start somewhere, so even if you've never played or think you're terrible at throwing a frisbee, come join us at a practice and see what it's all about!
Practice:
Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:00PM – 11:00PM, Bluff Practice Fields (1101 Bluff Road, Columbia, SC)
Sundays 10:00AM –1:00 PM (A Team only), *usually* at Blatt Fields (1400 Wheat St., Columbia, SC 29201)
Need a ride? Before the first practice, we create a carpooling system to get everyone to practice safely and efficiently. You will be in a car with other people in your dorm/living area.
